We Are Fruit People

We Are Fruit People

Mar 10, 2014 /

Last year around this time Mike and I challenged each other to two fruits and two veggies per day. We had a little magnet board so we could keep track of who had eaten what. It was our way of guaranteeing at least a few fresh foods each day. We kept up with our challenge for a long time. We aren’t as serious (although we should be) about it anymore, but we do try to eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as possible. It helps that I love juicing – and I’m hopeful that spring time will bring even more fresh produce into our home.

But really I’m here to talk about our fruit bowl problems.

It wasn’t big enough.

The bananas would get crushed and turn brown just a couple days after coming home from the store.

Small fruits would get stuck at the bottom and we wouldn’t realize they were still there until after they’d gone bad.

It was wasteful and sad.

I did lots of brainstorming. I thought about getting one of those hanging fruit baskets but our ceilings are really tall in our kitchen. I also considered getting multiple containers to just sit on the countertop, but I’m trying to avoid the “clutter”. So baskets hanging from the wall was where I landed.

Wall Planters as Fruit Baskets

This wall has been empty since we moved in. We were considering building some custom shelves for some extra storage but never got around to it. The wall also has a phone jack on it. It was time for the phone jack to disappear.

What you’ll need: wall baskets, small hooks, fruits and veggies.

It was very simple. I used a level, a pencil, and a drill. Easy peasy.

What do you think? We love it. It’s so easy to see what fruits and veggies we have and it’s easy to just grab and go. I also love that they’re off the counter, although I’m pretty sure the spot where the fruit bowl used to be is already filled with clutter. I need to dedicate a day to declutter.

2 door garage

2 door garage

Feb 27, 2014 /

It feels like forever ago that Mike’s grandparents were here – but this post is mostly about that.

Grandpa J is a very hard working grandpa. He is a “master” at construction things (in my opinion) so when they walked through the new house he had lots of great ideas for us to update it.

It should probably be noted that I was pretty sick when they were visiting. I spent a lot of time in bed and my memory is a little foggy on everything that happened while they were here. But I do know the Grandpa J put Mike to work and that our garage went from having one door to having two.

We were lucky that there was already a door frame put in. The previous owners just never put in the door. All Grandpa J and Mike had to do was cut the hole – and a lot of other things but I really want to clarify that I wasn’t feeling well and being able to take these photos was all I could contribute to this project.

We bought/rented all of our supplies at home depot. I had no idea it was so cheap to rent tools for a day! In total this project cost us about $215 including the door and the hardware. Yippee!

It was snowy and freezing the day they did this. Mike would occasionally come in and warm up his hands over the stove (Grandma J was making homemade chicken noodles). We are very pleased with the outcome and so grateful for the grandparents for helping us get this project done. We are debating moving the fence up a little ways so the door goes out into the backyard and we also need to get some dirt to level out the step when you walk outside the door. Right now it’s quite a step down.

I’m a little nervous for spring time and this house. The yard is essentially non existent and there is zero landscaping. Yard work has never been something I love, so hopefully Mike has some great inspiration//previous knowledge on how to grow grass or plant things. But now we have a door from the garage to the yard and I think that’s a great first step.

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday was the first day that I looked in the mirror and actually thought my hair was getting longer! It was a great feeling!!

At 8 weeks, Mike trimmed the back of my hair and my bangs. He also took a little off the top to keep it healthy. I love that he can cut my hair and that it always turns out good. I am definitely ready for my hair to get a little longer, but patience is KEY in pixie growth.

Patience. Patience. Patience.

I haven’t tried out any new styles yet, just sticking with messy//curly and it’s working for me. Yesterday I straightened it and that’s probably why I thought it looked longer.

Okay, pictures…
