This Season

I am going through a season of life that usually catches me off guard. And no, it’s not the Christmas season – I see that one coming from lightyears away. I am not able to put my finger on exactly what it is or why it’s here, but it’s pushing me to reflect on who I am. Who God is.

I am in a season of reflection.

Reflecting on my life, how far God has brought me in these (almost) 25 years and on how far I still have left to go.

Is my day to day life the way God wants it to be?

I was encouraged last week when we were out to dinner with my parents for my dad’s birthday (happy birthday dad). We were asking him about his life, his favorite memories, his tougher seasons. I asked about his season after college before he got married and settled down. You know, the closest season of his to compare to mine. And he said it was not a great time in his life. He felt lost and confused. He didn’t feel like he had a purpose. He was in limbo.

And maybe that’s how I feel? Maybe I’m in limbo. Unsure of my purpose before I become a mom, before kids are on our radar. Because that’s what I’ve always wanted to do: be a mom. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I’m doing now. I’m a housewife, blogging, nanny. I love it. But I know that God has something more for me now. More purpose.

So, I am also in a season of seeking.

Seeking to learn more about God, about people, and how that relationship comes together in a beautiful sacrifice.

I am seeking my purpose. What does is look like to be a woman of God with no worldly things defining her?

At the end of all these thoughts lies these big words that I typically don’t like to use..

I D O N T K N O W

I don’t know the answers and maybe that’s why I am trying so hard to reflect upon them. To dig a little bit deeper into my purpose. To figure out who God has called me to be instead of putting on these different attitudes to fill this time of limbo and still appear to be a “good” Christian with everything figured out. It’s a confusing time.

But so far, my “I don’t knows” have all pointed to Jesus. And that gives me hope.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.”
1 Peter 5:10

One Year Later

It was a year ago today that Mike and I made the journey to Wichita to sign a serious stack of documents and became homeowners.

I’ll give you a little throw back! Remember the pixie??

The first thing I did once we took possession of our home was vacuum it. I will always love having this picture of me so happy and just vacuuming away.

It was about a month later (on my birthday) that we loaded up our little house in Sterling and made the drive to Wichita.

It’s so hard to believe that it has been a full year since this house became ours. I fall more in love with it everyday and I am constantly dreaming of what project will be next. I feel like we have tackled so much in one year.

And now, my favorite transformation…

Those white cabinets sing to me every morning. I also soak up all the trim painting I did over the course of our year. Only two small rooms left with zero motivation. This hallway transformation is still my favorite trim progress though. I also love the fire pit we added to the backyard.

Happy 1 year anniversary, home ownership! You’re a wild and crazy journey with so much excitement, frustrations, and mostly adventure. I love that this anniversary falls right around thanksgiving. We couldn’t be more thankful for the roof over our heads and all the support we’ve had in our decision to be in Wichita.

My Christmas Gift

On Thursday evening I was out working late and Mike had the house to himself. I assumed he had spent the evening relaxing since it is technically his Friday night, but he had a wonderful surprise for me when I got home.

Our very own, full size Christmas tree!

I screamed in excitement. He had set it all up with Christmas music and little evergreen scent sticks to make it smell real.

Apparently his evening was much more eventful than I could have ever anticipated.

He found the tree on Craigslist for a GREAT deal. It supposedly came from a smoke free home but I guess it smelled horrible when he got it home. So my wonderful husband gave our brand new (to us) Christmas tree a baking soda bath. Luckily it breaks down into small pieces so he didn’t have to put the entire Christmas tree into the shower at once.

I was so shocked. We talked over and over again about how our small tree was perfect for us right now – no need to spend excessive money on a big tree when we are content with our cute little baby tree. But this tree is big, beautiful, and in wonderful condition so we will have it for a long while.

The next day we woke up, made a trip to home depot for lights, and lit that baby up!

I am so happy. I realize it is still before Thanksgiving, but I’m still in a phase of life where 28-30 days just isn’t enough Christmas. Now I need to find some inspiration for ornaments. I don’t want to spend a fortune especially since we’re so happy with it just having lights.

Are you setting up your Christmas tree before Thanksgiving this year? With the cold weather last week, I couldn’t help myself but to open up our small box of Christmas and celebrate a little early.
